The Unexpected Fall is the debut novel of Anna Salcedo and gave me a very strong The Spanish Love Deception + The Hating Game vibe. It is the story of Will and Genesis who, in the beginning are depicted as (sort of) enemies and when they are forced to work on a project together, things change. And well, we know how that horn toots.

For a debut novel, Anna has done a great job setting the scene and drawing the readers into the story. The way she has tackled the issue of sexism in workplace is commendable and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed. The plot was pretty basic and the storyline fell apart at the seams in the originality section. However, her narration made up for most of it. Anna’s writing style is alluring most of the time. Sure, there are certain places where the novel felt like it was dragging for too long. This was the case especially during the first half when the book was filled with pages upon pages and internal monologue as opposed to character interactions and dialogues.

The dialogues were cheesy and my inner romantic couldn’t stop squealing. The chemistry between will & Genesis was off the charts and I looked forward to reading more and more of her interactions. There are also some steamy scenes in the book which are be titillating enough. The characters, in all, were coherently penned and the fact that they were diverse made me so happy. With some editing and a few tweaks here and there, this book will be amazing.

In a nutshell, The Unexpected Fall is a good novel for you to cuddle up with this Valentine’s Day or when you are in the mood for some soft romance. Trust me, this book won’t disappoint.
