The Unhoneymooners was an overall disappointing read for one and one reason alone – the main characters. The story in itself was swoon-worthy, sweet and filled to the brim with witty banter. However, when it came to the main characters’ personalities, it was a tragedy. No, for real. Everything aside, I cannot and WILL not condone the male lead gaslighting the main character throughout the novel.
I entered this book with my expectations sky-high because this book amalgamates two of my most favorite tropes – fake dating and enemies-to-lovers and of course, the name “The Unhoneymooners” is pretty amazing. The premise was pretty interesting and it drew me in pretty fast. it reminded me of the phrase ‘draw me in like one of your French gals.’ The quips were hilarious and instigated a lot of snorts from me.
If I am being honest, I really enjoyed the book in the beginning and well into around 60% of the book. However, when the leads finally enter into a relationship and have their first real conversation, I started abhorring them as a couple. The world building was amazing and the writing style of the authors was also engaging and candid.
The only thing I absolutely LOATHED in this book was the attitude of the male lead and hence, the relationship of the leads. I really wish I could’ve given this book at least a four-star rating but that, unfortunately, won’t be fair to my morals. I will still try to read more of these authors’ books because I liked their writing style but this book was just not for me.
